There is something quietly radical about a painter choosing a paintbrush as her subject. Chris Adessa has spent years looking at the world — the rolling hills of West Marin, the light over the San Francisco Bay, the worn surfaces of everyday objects — and in *Big Brush* she turns that gaze back on the studio itself. The brush stands upright on its vertical panel like a figure at rest, full bristles soft and pale against a luminous grey ground, dark handle descending into a small hanging loop at the base. It is utterly ordinary. It is completely itself. Adessa began her Everyday Sacred series after years of plein air work, after learning to adapt to every condition the outdoors could present, after hearing the voices of her teachers in every decision she made. Working now from her Sausalito studio above the Bay — window open, light shifting — she removed color from her palette and found that what remained was more honest: form, shadow, weight, presence. A paintbrush holds the history of every mark ever made with it. In monochrome, you feel that history without knowing it. *Big Brush* belongs to a lineage of still life painting that stretches back centuries, but it lives entirely in the present — contemporary in its restraint, personal in its subject, and quietly moving in the way that only the most ordinary things can be. It is a painting about making. It is a painting about looking. It is a painting about the sacred hidden inside the daily.
