Every morning Chris Adessa climbs the stairs of the ICB Building in Sausalito, opens her studio window to let the salt air off the Bay drift in — a necessity born of a chemical sensitivity that once threatened to end her painting life — and sets to work. The building she has painted here is not merely her subject; it is her shelter, her community, and the place where decades of artistic practice have found their home. The Industrial Center Building was born in the wartime urgency of Marinship, where ships were forged for a nation at war. Now it hums with a different kind of making: painters, sculptors, photographers, sound artists — a Tribeca rising above the tidal flats of the Bay. When Adessa trained her eye on its corner facade, she saw what she always sees in the ordinary: the extraordinary waiting to be named. Row upon row of lit windows become a kind of music, each glowing pane a note in a long chord of human creativity. The curved crown of the roofline, the bold stenciled letters 'ICB ART,' anchor the image in time and place without apology. Painted in the finely nuanced monochrome palette that defines her Everyday Sacred series, the warmth stripped of color becomes something more honest than color could offer — pure form, pure light, pure meaning. This is a portrait of a place that made her, painted by a woman the place helped shape.
