There is a moment every painter knows: you pick up the brush before the work begins. The weight of it in your hand. The worn handle shaped by years of use. The bristles still holding the ghost of the last color they touched. Chris Adessa has given that moment a painting — a portrait not of a subject but of the instrument of all portraits. Brush With Reality stands upright on its pale ground, alone, still, and entirely present. Adessa's path to this painting is woven into the work itself. Years ago a chemical sensitivity closed the door on conventional studio painting, but she kept the window open — literally — and found her way through plein air, through landscape, through the rolling hills of West Marin and the light above the San Francisco Bay. When she came indoors again, she brought with her everything the outdoors had taught her: how to see clearly, how to trust what is in front of you, how to honor the ordinary moment. The Everyday Sacred series grew from that accumulated wisdom. A paintbrush, rendered in meticulous monochrome oil on a narrow vertical panel, becomes a self-portrait, a devotional object, and a quiet act of gratitude. The black and white palette carries its own memory. Adessa has spoken of how it takes her back to the era of black and white photography — a time when images held still, when looking was slower, when the world revealed itself in gradations of light and shadow rather than the saturation of color. Standing before Brush With Reality, you feel that stillness. You see the tool. You think of the hand that holds it, and the hands that made every painting you have ever loved.
