There is a moment, just before the first sip of tea, when everything goes still. The kettle has done its work, the cup is waiting, and the teapot sits there — round, warm, unhurried — holding everything in suspension. Chris Adessa has been painting that moment. Working in her Sausalito studio above the San Francisco Bay, with the window open as it always is, she set a white porcelain teapot on a grey ground and gave it the full attention of a portrait sitting. What emerged is 'The Art of Tea': an oil painting that sees the extraordinary hidden inside the completely ordinary. Adessa's choice to work in monochrome is never arbitrary. Stripping the world of color — the way an old photograph does — forces both painter and viewer to slow down and truly look. Here the teapot's globular body becomes a study in light itself: a soft glow across the belly, a crisp window reflection caught in ceramic glaze, the gentle arc of the spout reaching left like a hand mid-gesture. The cool grey atmosphere around it feels like the hush of an early morning kitchen, the kind of quiet that belongs only to you. This painting is part of Adessa's ongoing 'Everyday Sacred' series — her artist's declaration that the sacred is not distant or rare but woven into the rituals we barely notice. A teapot is not a grand subject. And yet, given this kind of attention, it becomes one. 'The Art of Tea' is an invitation to pause, to recognise the beauty already present in your day, and to carry that recognition home.
